Royal decree addressed to the Bishop of Guadalajara, 1780 Jun 14.

Royal decree addressed to the Bishop of Gualdalajara asking for his cooperation in establishing two custodias in the Provincias Internas, one to consist of the Californias, Sonora, and the Taraumaras, and the other of New Mexico, Chihuahua, and Coahuila and Texas. Nine vicars are to supervise the first, eight the second. The purpose of the custodias is to insure that local priests do not take advantage of the vast distances between Mexico and the frontiers to abuse their authority over their spiritual charges. Antonio de los Reyes and Joseph Antonio de Areche are to carry out this decree.
